  • Ice Storm.... really bad

    We are so lucky.

So far about an inch of rain has fallen; most of it turning to ice throughout the Adirondack mountains. All around us are reports of downed powerlines, crushed cars, hugh trees on the ground.

There are 200,000 homes without power at the moment. They expect that number to grow as it is still raining and freezing out there. They think that falling trees throughout the area will plunge another 50,000 into darkness and cold. The power companies are anticipating a target date of Sunday for "turn on".

Many shelters are opening for residents in Saratoga County, Albany County and points north.

My town seems to have had mostly snow... not sure why... but very glad about that. We do have the generator gassed up and at the ready just in case we lose power.

EDIT   Just heard the weather report... It will continue to rain and freeze all day, through the night and predicted to stop midday Saturday. They are saying that we will get an additional 2 inches of snow on top of the ice and then... yes there's more.... bizzard strenghth winds and dropping temps. The cold is going to be more of a problem then the wind because the whole slushy, icy snowy mix is going to harden to the consistancy of cement. So we are being told to dig out and move what snow needs to be moved (such as the pile left at the end of the driveway by the snowplows) before it becomes unmoveable later today and tonight. Sheesh!

  • Holy cow! Hope you have enough water etc. laid in sounds rough and I was going to gripe about -5 this morning.
I hope you stay warm and safe.

  • Yikes!  Are you still not feeling well, too?

  • @psychoticfrog - We lay in supplies and such every winter because we never know when and how hard a storm is going to hit us. It seems to have only dropped snow on us (mostly) at the time. Most of the problems are directly north to us. It only takes a few miles and a few more feet in elevation to drastically change a storms effects. It's actually hovering around 32 to 30 degress right now, just around the freezing point. The temp is going to plunge later today. Glad we have a generator.

  • @PaulsShar - I'm feeling much, much, better. Now I have to find a way to recoupe the lost time and catch up with my Christmas preparations.

  • good! I'm glad you are prepared, so many folks don't think ahead, I'm one of them get caught off guard at least one storm a year. Hang in there.

  • My My, that is awful. We had the same kind of thing 4 years ago and many many trees here in our woods are still down from that storm. Free fire wood! I'm glad you all are ok...It can become very burdensome with no electric in this cold weather!

  • We had snow and freezing rain today too, but not as bad as that!  Stay safe.

  • I've read similar things all afternoon from cyber friends all along the northern edge of the eastern seaboard. We had a small storm last night but warm sunshine today. Not sure that luck will hold out another week or so though. Here's hoping you keep the power.--MG

  • My dad in Schenectady just did a commercial for one of those power generators!  I remember all the awful winter weather - Even in Tokyo we have to move the slush before it freezes.  Even if it is only a few inches, it still freezes into a skating rink.

  • I saw pictures on the news.  You are lucky you weren't in the ice area.  What a mess!

  • Oh my god..wow! That sucks. I wonder why things like that occur so rough with nature.

I"m glad that you are in a better situation than the others. It's something to be happy about..of course praying for those folks would be something I should get to myself.

One reason why I hate the holidays..weird things happen.

    Stay safe!

  • Hope you are out of harm's way.  I hope you did not get to use that generator.

  • Our turn: it's -16 and dropping they are calling for wind with gusts of 70-80 mph making the wind chill -25 to -35 and I'm hibernating! brrr...

    Happy New Year! To you!

  • RYC: I don't know the C conversion either which is why I specify "F" -21 F is where we are at right now, and evidently plugging in the big truck was a waste of time either the headbolt heater is non functioning or something it doesn't warm is frozen, all I know is I'm going nuts not being able to go when I need/want to! I've already told DH his next project should be building a garage, it's ridiculous to live up here without one! I'm one of those awful people that expect things to work when you switch them on, and one that doesn't know how to fix them when they don't! Poor DH it all falls to him.

  • @psychoticfrog - good grief!!!!!!!!!  We will get about two weeks in January, on average, where the temp will hover at about -10, and a -20 is not all that unusual. But we don't stay in that range for very long. We have had Januarys where the temp. never rises above 0 degrees F for the whole month and into Feb. too. That's not the norm. Our biggest problem is the wind which plunges the wind chill into impossibly cold ranges. Stay out too long and you can snap your fingers and nose right off. Hope your cold spell snaps soon.

  • RYC: It's about the same here this is way cold way early for us and usually it's a few days at a time not over a week straight. We are not in the part of Alaska that sees these temps for months on end. we are farther south and usually don't have that rough of winters cold yes but not prolonged bitter cold like this. While I'm thankful it's not worse and we did not get the winds that were threatened I'm still sick of this! but we have no idea where we'd move to if we moved! sigh

  • @psychoticfrog - Come to the Adirodack Mountains of New York... The growing season is longer... but the mountains as so beautiful and in some places so remote that you would think you are in the Alaskan wilderness. We actually have a few areas with "alpine" zoning. The hunting is great, if you hunt, and we have winter sports galore and summer vacation spots to die for. We are only a few hours south of Canada and a few hours north of NY City. You can be as rustic or urban as you wish.

  • Hmm... sounds nice, I'll talk to DH, but before we can move anywhere we have to get the kids launched and this house finished so we can sell. But right now I'd just get on a plane and fly south! maybe Florida, and just thaw out! since the truck doesn't qualify as carry on luggage guess I'm stuck here. for a while longer.

  • RYC: You and me both! -25 F this morning and I'm off to run errands because tomorrow is DH's birthday. brr....
